Black Pullet Adventures: Astral Projection

A True and Faithful Account of Actual Magic
It remains for me to speak to you of the Talismans, those magic circles, which will give you the power to command all the elements, to avoid all the dangers, all the snares of your enemies, and to assure you the success of all your enterprises and the fulfillment of your wishes.
- The Sage of the Pyramids

This entry is a direct transcription from my grimoire of a specific magical operation that was performed July 12th of  2013. The day was suffocating hot and the night was nearly equally oppressive. The air conditioning in our home was spotty at best, and on this night it was completely shot. Combine that with a cramped ritual chamber and a robe, and ritual can become a survival exercise in addition to an act of magic. This is where we lay our scene…

Number Eight: Go Anywhere - Do Anything

Circumstances find our hero with a great need to apply the 8th Law and attend The Gathering deep in the night sky. Having always struggled with conscious, willed astral projection, this presents a problem. Enter our favorite work from the grimoire tradition; La Poule Noir, The Black Pullet or The Black Chicken as it translates. Thumbing through the descriptions of the talismans I found this entry:

The 8th Talisman of the Sage of the Pyramids

from the grimoire called The Black Pullet:

“The talisman and the ring (Figure No. 10) will make you invisible to all eyes, even those of the spirits. Only the Great Being could be witness to your steps and your actions. You will penetrate everywhere into the bosom of the seas, into the bowels of the earth, you can likewise survey the airs, and no action of men can be hidden from you. Say only: Benatir, Cararkau, Dedos, Etinarmi.”

To be invisible to all eyes, even those of the spirits (jiin), and to penetrate everywhere land, sea or sky… That sounds like astral projection to me!

The Talisman and ring are pictured immediately following the description.

Black Pullet 8

The author goes on to state:
“…I repeated these four words, and through the walls of the Pyramid I saw two Arabs who were on the plain and who were profiting by the obscurity to ransack a tomb where they hoped to find something of value. “You will be able, when you wish, to prove the other things which I will have taught you, it will only be necessary to place the ring successively on the different fingers of the right hand…”

Sounds like if I can activate this talisman, I’ll be out and up very soon.

The grimoire says this of the construction of the talismans and rings:
“As it is possible that you have not had the means of making talismans and rings similar to mine,” the old man said to me, “you will make them up in the manner which I will indicate. Know that the rings are of bronzed steel with the characters engraved thereon. The talismans should be made of silk cloth in the dimensions of the figures.”

Talisman number 8 (10 in some editions), my talisman, is to be made of yellow satin embroidered in black silk.
In general, I think I’m pretty resourceful, but those specs were a tall order on short notice and so I did what any self-respecting mage would do in a pinch:
I drew it on parchment.

I collected my parchment pad, compass, ruler, pens, pencils and of colored pencils, and got to work. Arts and Crafts time!

My finished product is about “8 diameter and appropriately colored. The ring I fashioned by altering a cheap tin ring with a blank bezel. The characters I engraved with a precision file on the band. The activation words I engraved on the bezel itself. “Benatir, Cararkau, Dedos, Etinarmi

Upon completion of the ring, prior to any ritual work sitting in my mess of arts a crafts scraps, pencils and whatnot, I got the feeling. It’s the same feeling I get in the presence of something big and intelligent, as well as at the conclusion of a ritual working. It’s the feeling I associate with magical activity.

The Magician's Staff

The magician's staff from the grimoire. This special staff doubles as a magic circle when arranged mouth to tail as in the diagram. Aside from being a feat of mechanical engineering that was beyond my equipment at the time, the circle made by a 6' staff would be a very tight squeeze!

The Black Pullet has seen many editions over the years. Some better than others. Alternate versions with completely unique talismans have also surfaced under various names

I have placed the talisman and ring upon the altar and after my standard frame rite recited the two conjurations from the Pullet. I did not get “the feeling” but I did get the feeling that I was being observed. It could be that judaic tone of the conjurations threw me off. Additionally I have committed a large portion of the evenings energetic appropriations to the talisman and ring.

The feeling of being observed has returned periodically during these last few days of experiments. Always just before I state the conjuration.

Shortly thereafter I retired to bed. Gazing into the talisman with the ring on my finger, I began to softly chant the words like a mantra until I slept. “Benatir, Cararkau, Dedos, Etinarmi”.

Pullet Magic Circle
The Magic Circle

That night I had spectacular lucid dreams, false awakenings, and jolting startles as I exited and entered my body over and over again. It’s working.

I have since had many experiences with the Black Pullet, some of which will be shared here. Unfortunately the original talisman that I have described in this entry was destroyed in a fire, but I have made several replacements since then, all to great effect.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Sorcerous Intrusions

The most excellent and potent sorceries manifest in the world of horrors like a death-dealing lightning bolt out of a clear blue sky. A violent intrusion upon the reliability of the natural world (if even for the briefest of moments), that collapses the expectations of a harmonious and predictable world in all who witness.
